A Truly GREEN season

Summertown, being a multicultural environment respecting all cultures and religions, celebrates every joyous season throughout the year.

We decided the next seasonal celebration, in this case Xmas, was going reflect the changing times and values of Summertown.

Every year Summertown asks “Who is putting up the tree?” and as we recently moved into our green LEED Gold certified offices there was no tree to use from previous years. Therefore who better to ask then our Design or Sales team for idea? Being a green company the immediate answer, from our Sales Director Heidi Demuynck, was that we need an environmentally friendly Christmas tree, however as most great ideas go, this was easier said than done! Before making the tree we had to make a small prototype to see what type of materials were needed. The prototype came out well so the next step was to create a big one. We went to the yard and collected discarded materials such as concrete blocks, plywood, wood shavings, old steel chains and wires. The only constraint was that we could not hang lights in the tree for safety reasons, but a quick solution was found by placing stars in the tree made out of carton and aluminum foil.

The end result looks great, an eco-friendly tree made out of recycled materials surrounded by colorful presents from Secret Santa.
